I recently found myself in a heated debate with my family about the new era of technology. My mother expressed that she felt technology was the reason why people are starting to lose the art of communication, meaning speaking. My brother I agreed to differ on this subject. Instead of saying that communication is lost, it’s simply being portrayed in a different way. I think what she was meaning when she said, people don’t actually talk anymore but just text or email, facebook, or whatever, she meant that we don’t physically exchange words as much as people use to. Now I would agree with this, because I think it’s true. I find myself always texting, and hardly ever using my actually phone for talking. But I wouldn’t agree with her that the loss of communication is approaching, since isn’t that what texting is…a form of communication?
We argued on the subject for awhile, with my mother still trying to stand strong on her beliefs, though I’m pretty sure we were able to convince her that people weren’t stopping to communicate. Just as we thought we had her completely convinced, she threw down that because of different technologies, people are starting become more anti-social, with friends and family. We asked her for some different of examples of why she believes this. She then explained to us that she noticed a changed from her generation to our generation, duh.of course there’s going to be change, and how children these days seem to distance themselves from their families more then back when she was child. The reason being that, were more into our new high-tech equipment and such. I wasn’t sure if I was going to agree or disagree with this one. I do think it’s true that kids these days are more interested in playing video games, or texting friends, then sitting down and having a nice quiet evening discussing their school life with their parents. But I think it just goes with the generation, and the culture that we’ve been brought up in.
In defense I said that my mother couldn’t just sum up that new technology is leading to an absence of communication. If anything, it’s creating more opportunities to communicate with one another, just not through our actually voice. And that could be a good thing; it could help us prepare for things like a career. If we practice our writing skills, it could really help one excel in high school in college.
